Representing Russia with Discipline and Purpose at the ITF World Championship 2025

For Russian competitor Andrey Ketov, stepping onto the mat in Barcelona this July means far more than competing for personal glory. It represents the culmination of years of hard work and the weight of national pride — but above all, it is a commitment to the people who have stood by him. As he prepares to take part in the ITF Taekwon-Do World Championship 2025, Ketov shares insights into his journey, his mindset, and what drives him to continue pushing boundaries.

A Responsibility Beyond the Tatami

“It’s a responsibility, first of all,” Ketov explains. “All my students, their parents, my children, friends and acquaintances will be watching my performance.” Representing Russia at such a level requires not only talent but also accountability to a broader community.

While training presents its usual challenges, financial constraints due to travel from Russia add another layer. “Traveling to European countries is now an expensive pleasure,” he notes, but it has never stopped him from preparing with full dedication.

Rigorous Physical and Mental Preparation

In the lead-up to this tournament, Ketov has repeated the focused regimen that brought him success at the Asian Championships in South Korea. “I had to lose weight to the required category. I trained with morning cross-country runs, evening sessions, boxing, and CrossFit,” he says.

Mentally, he finds strength in experience: “I have no problems with this. My experience helps me.”

Perspective Over Podium

Ketov’s goals go beyond titles. “I never set a goal for myself to take 1st place. It is more important for me to perform well.” His measure of success is rooted in quality, not ranking.

Global Curiosity and Respec

When asked about hypothetical exhibition matches, Ketov expresses interest in sparring with athletes from the USA and Argentina — nations he admires and wishes to learn from.

Summing up his journey ahead, he says:
“This World Championship is another chance to test your capabilities.”

Looking Forward to Spain

Outside the ring, Ketov is eager to experience Barcelona and broaden his personal horizons. “I have never been to Spain. I’m interested in expanding my geography of countries I have been lucky enough to visit.”
