Singapore’s very own Jonathan Sun, a champion at the Taekwon-Do ITF World Games 2023, has achieved remarkable success in the world of martial arts. In an exclusive interview, Jonathan shares his journey, influences, and aspirations in the field of Taekwon-Do.
Jonathan Sun’s victory at the 1st ITF World Games in Korea left him in disbelief. “The feeling is surreal since I did not imagine myself winning my category at the 1st ITF World Games,” he expressed. His most cherished moments during the tournament included the heartwarming embrace with his father, whom he considers one of his heroes. Additionally, witnessing the demonstration of mutual respect between ITF Korea and Kukkiwon practitioners performing each other’s styles left an indelible mark on him.
Jonathan’s journey in Taekwon-Do began at an early age, not by choice but destiny. With a father who is a Taekwon-Do teacher, he was immersed in the art from childhood. His formal training in ITF Taekwon-Do commenced in 1993 under his father’s tutelage, and he attended his first ITF tournament as a color belt in 1994 at Johor, Malaysia.
Having a Taekwon-Do teacher as a father had a profound impact on Jonathan’s journey. He considers it both a blessing and a privilege. Jonathan’s father, Master Daniel Sng, not only imparted the technical aspects of Taekwon-Do but also instilled the importance of the “Do” element, emphasizing character and values. His father’s dedication to his students and their success in life served as an inspiration for Jonathan, motivating him to follow in his footsteps.
