In the heart of Aylmer, Quebec, merely 10 kilometres from the national capital of Ottawa, began the extraordinary journey of Master Demers, a name that has become synonymous with dedication, excellence, and leadership in the world of ITF Taekwon-Do in Canada. His story is not merely a narrative of personal achievements but a testament to the transformative power of this martial art.

From his humble beginnings, post-hockey career, with the intention of staying fit, Master Demers embarked on a journey that would take him from earning his white belt to achieving the prestigious black belt. Through countless competitions at the local, provincial, and national level, his skill and passion for Taekwon-Do distinguished him, affording him the opportunity to meet emblematic figures of the sport, and most notably, to train under the tutelage of General Choi Hong Hi, a privilege that profoundly marked his path and philosophy in the art.

Upon earning his first degree and opening a school under the guidance of his instructor, Mr. William Fu, Demers realised the importance of teaching Taekwon-Do not just as a means to compete but as a way to impart the essential values of the Student Oath and the rich Korean culture. This understanding reflects the essence of General Choi Hong Hi’s teachings, who emphasised the profound meaning behind each movement, each gesture in Taekwon-Do.

The evolution of Taekwon-Do, from a little-known practice in 1983 to a recognised martial art, has been a journey filled with challenges and achievements. Demers recalls the time when he had to explain what Taekwon-Do was, distinguishing it from karate, to an audience that barely recognised its existence. Those were times when unity and collaboration among schools, under the International Taekwon-Do Federation and the guidance of General Choi, were indispensable for the cohesion and growth of the art.

Loyalty to his roots and principles led Master Demers to decisive moments in his career, such as his encounter with GM Choi Jung Hwa, which inspired a shift towards independence, allowing his school to flourish and enrich itself with encounters with international masters and new opportunities for his students.

Over four decades dedicated to Taekwon-Do, Master Demers has witnessed and been a protagonist in pivotal moments within the ITF in Canada, including the transition following the passing of General Choi Hong Hi in 2002, which marked the beginning of a new era and the facing of challenges that would test the unity and strength of the Taekwon-Do community in the country.

Under his leadership, the Canadian Elite Taekwon-Do has seen notable growth, evidenced in the organisation of international events, instructor courses, and championships that have placed Canada on the global Taekwon-Do map. His focus on inclusion and mutual respect has been key to overcoming divisions and advancing towards a common goal: to strengthen the ITF in Canada and honour its rich heritage.

Master Demers invites all Taekwon-Do practitioners to share his vision of dedication, humility, and respect, pillars he considers essential for leading with integrity inside and outside the dojang. His story is a call to action for future generations, urging them to pursue their dreams with passion and perseverance, and to contribute to the legacy of ITF Taekwon-Do with honour and excellence.

In Master Demers’ words, the true essence of Taekwon-Do transcends medals and titles; it lies in inspiring others to become better people and leaders in their communities. His journey is a shining example of how the martial art can shape lives, forge character, and unite people around shared values. In his path, Master Demers has not only left an indelible mark on Canadian Taekwon-Do but has also ignited a flame of inspiration that will continue to light the way for many, both within and outside the dojang.
