With unwavering dedication and a deep passion for Taekwon-Do, Venezuelan athlete Helvia J. Hernández is set to take the world stage at the ITF Taekwon-Do World Championship in Barcelona 2025.

“To represent my country at a World Championship is, without a doubt, a dream come true,” she shares. “It’s a tremendous honour and something I’ve worked toward for many years. It proves that with perseverance, it’s never too late to achieve your goals.”

Balancing life and training

Helvia reflects on the road to Barcelona: “The biggest obstacle has been balancing my daily responsibilities, work, and intense Taekwon-Do training. The discipline and consistency required have been demanding, but my love for this martial art and for representing Venezuela make it all worth it.”

Her strategy going into the tournament is clear: “I trust my training and my abilities, and I’ll follow the guidance of my instructors, who have the experience needed to compete at this level. Mental preparation is key to adapting to any situation that arises during the event.”

The power of mindset

Mental strength plays a vital role in her performance. “It’s essential,” she says. “It helps me process the changes I need to make to improve both physically and technically. It helps me integrate new techniques, manage pressure and stress, and eliminate doubt. My mind needs to be fully focused on the task at hand.”

When it comes to the fine line between a strong performance and becoming World Champion, Helvia believes the difference lies in consistency and detail. “A solid performance might have great moments, but taking first place requires flawless execution throughout. And, of course, there’s always an element of luck. As my Sabumnim says, ‘Everyone who trains has the right to win.’”

More than just competition

Outside the ring, Helvia looks forward to building connections. “I want to exchange experiences, meet new people, and connect with athletes from all over the world. This trip is the perfect blend of a major sporting challenge, personal growth, and cultural exchange. I also can’t wait to discover the city and try the local food.”

If she had to summarise what this championship means in just one sentence?
“Enjoying a great experience.”
