In a remarkable display of skill, sportsmanship, and efficient organization, the Gasuteng Open Championships Tournament took place on October 28th in Johannesburg, South Africa. Hosted by Taekwon-Do South Africa (TSA) and MTG Magua Taekwon-Do Group, the event unfolded at the Scott Gymnasium in the Wits University Education Campus in Parktown.
The organizing committee, led by Sabum Nim Tanya Magua overseeing administration and Sahun-Nim Norman Magua directing the set-up, ensured a seamless execution of the tournament. Preparations included a day-before setup and meticulous bracketing, with online pre-registrations contributing to the overall efficiency.
Gauteng, the most populated province in South Africa, hosted clubs from across its cities, including Johannesburg and Pretoria. The tournament welcomed participants from Kwa Zulu Natal and even neighboring Mozambique. The diverse pool of competitors showcased the multicultural fabric of South Africa, with males, females, and various ethnicities competing and supporting, truly embodying the Rainbow Nation spirit.
The competition began with the umpires’ meeting, leading into children’s Patterns and sparring divisions. Black Belts then showcased their Patterns and Sparring prowess, followed by Patterns and Sparring divisions for those aged 13 years old and above. The standard of performance remained consistently high, with intense and exciting matches leaving a lasting impression.
The Gasuteng Open Championships stood out for finishing in record time, a commendable feat considering the round-robin and repechage bracketing used in sparring divisions. This unique approach, aimed at providing competitors with more ring time, highlights the organization’s commitment to nurturing talent in developmental tournaments.
A new medals ceremony format and the dedication of team officials and assistants contributed to the event’s efficiency, allowing participants to wrap up proceedings in time to support the Springboks, South Africa’s Rugby team, in the finals of the World Cup later that evening.
